Journey to Dakar - David Thomas to fulfill lifelong dream in memory of his Brother

Journey to Dakar - David Thomas to fulfill lifelong dream in memory of his Brother:

David Thomas is an amateur rider from Cape Town, South Africa who has been racing motorbikes since he was ten years old. He will now take on the 2017 Dakar Rally, one of the longest and toughest off-road rallies in the world that is taking place from 2-14 January 2017.

On the Husqvarna 450 Rally Bike, he will take on this challenge with the HT Rally team backing him throughout his journey. The rally takes place over two weeks and the competitors will have to ride 9000 kilometers and scaling altitudes of almost 4.000m above sea level in this time frame. The route will take them through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina.

His dream stems from his younger days when him and his brother, Justin Thomas, were
training together to take on this very rally. His brother, however, tragically passed away in a car accident in 2003. This fueled David’s dream and he has vowed to complete the Dakar in memory of his late brother.

A talented sportsman, he started with competitive mountain bike and downhill racing in 1991, and even won the SA Downhill Championship in 1992. He went on to claim the title of Overall Western Cape Enduro Champion, South Africa for many years. He finally started training specifically for long distance rallies in 2008 and completed the Red Bull Romaniacs in 2014, followed by the Abu-Dhabi Desert Challenge and the Afriqia Merzouga Rally, which qualified him for the 2017 Dakar Rally.

“Pushing through the unknown for 8,800km is a challenge I am ready for,” he says. He does, however, need some funding as the Dakar Rally is very expensive to compete in. It costs a total of R1.8 million rand for him to compete. This challenging and grueling rally is also a massive spectator sport – with more spectators than even Formula 1 has!

Leatt has provided him with some of our top gear to keep him safe and we are excited to follow his journey.
